Remembering Calvin Furino, Hoboken's "Hot Dog King"

Calvin Furino

In April 2023, Hoboken lost the owner of one of its staples since 1956. Calvin H. Furino of "Cal's & Sons" died peacefully at home at 89, surrounded by loved ones, on April 2, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Claire; his children Calvin, Russell and Richie; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born in Hoboken in 1933, Calvin served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the social club Here to Eternity. He married Claire in 1955 and became known as the "Hot Dog King" of Hoboken, starting his own hot dog business and opening Cal's & Sons with his wife. He enjoyed bocce, wine and time with his family, and his integrity and hard work made him a respected patriarch.

Family and friends paid their respects at Lawton-Turso Funeral Home, with a funeral Mass at St. Francis Church. His son Russell had run the business since Calvin's retirement in 2008, continuing the legacy. Cal's & Sons, at Harrison and Newark Streets by the Jersey Avenue railroad trestle, closed temporarily as the family mourned.
