In March 2023, the City of Hoboken revisited a dark chapter in its history by dedicating a plaque at Tom Olivieri Park honoring the victims of the Hoboken fires. More than 40 years earlier, the fires claimed the lives of 56 residents and left thousands more impacted and displaced. The plaque serves as much-needed recognition for the victims and their families.
The initiative was led by Rose Orozco and Reverend Elaine Ellis Thomas, who brought leadership and healing to the subject, with the Hoboken Fire Victims Memorial Committee playing a crucial role.
