The "Heaven, Hell or Hoboken" Tee

Heaven Hell or Hoboken tee

"The only thing standing between you and your dreams is the story you keep telling yourself." In spring 2023, What Hoboken Sounds Like released its "Heaven, Hell or Hoboken" tee for pre-order on whathobokensoundslike.com.

The history

"Heaven, Hell or Hoboken" was originally a promise made by General John J. Pershing during World War I, referring to troops being shipped out through Hoboken as a port of embarkation. Between June 1917 and November 1918, some 1.5 to 2 million soldiers passed through Hoboken, but most were fed and housed by the U.S. military, so local businesses saw the population decline and the city's revenues dropped sharply. At the time, German citizens and Americans of German descent made up about 25 percent of Hoboken's population, far outnumbering the next largest immigrant groups, the Irish and Italians.

The tee

  • Designed by Victor Lopez Jr. of Design Mafia Inc., with original imagery
