Salsa Legend Charlie Lopez on Hoboken Talks

Charlie Lopez on Hoboken Talks

After three years of asking, the Hoboken Historical Museum welcomed musician Charlie Lopez as a guest on Hoboken Talks in May 2025, in a conversation led by host Raul Morales II, Esq.

A life in music

  • Charlie cited the Beatles as an early inspiration. He started on a set of drums from his dad, jamming with his two brothers in the living room, before switching to piano.
  • He never had formal training. "Quite simply, a melody was ever-present in his heart," the museum wrote.
  • From age 16 he played parks, block parties and clubs. That led to New York clubs including Studio 54 and the Copacabana, and to tours of Paris and Sweden with Frankie Ruiz, whom he mentored early in his career.

A Hoboken neighbor

Charlie also ran a bike shop on 2nd Street between Monroe and Jackson. Host Raul Morales remembered it as a welcoming place, almost a community center, where Charlie made sure any kid who needed a bike got one.

WHSL founder Victor Lopez Jr. was there to see his cousin's interview, the first time the two had seen each other in more than 15 years. "That Lopez lineage is very strong," Victor said.
